Arsene Wenger: Fighting for Arsenal’s Glory or Personal Ego?

The topic that I am writing about today is definitely going to ignite fire against me in the Arsenal community, and a lot of gooners would be calling me a disgrace yet again. I would also get comments and advices by a lot of Arsenal fans to go and support Chelsea or Manchester United. But before I move on to discuss the topic of my post today, I would like to clarify that I am a Gunner at heart and I would remain a Gunner always, and I am not like a lot of Arsenal fans out there who don’t welcome any sort of critical analysis. Take it or leave it! I am going to write what I analyse and would raise my voice against the concerns that a top club like Arsenal are facing in these times.

The topic of discussion today is Arsene Wenger and I would like to highlight his past achievements before I move on to being critical about him. Everyone knows and even I admit that Arsene Wenger signing up for Arsenal back in 1996 was one of the bestest things that happened to Arsenal in its entire history. Since the arrival of this man, Arsenal has been on a roller coaster ride and has become one of the most elite clubs in Europe. Arsene Wenger put in a lot of hard work during his time at Arsenal, and he has proved his worth by taking the club to the top flight. Only two clubs ruled the English League for about a decade and that were Arsenal and Manchester United. During his time at Arsenal, Arsene Wenger signed many players and with his amazing tactics of having foreign players, each having a entirely unique skill set, blended a team of super stars. All this hard work led to Arsenal being a very strong club and other teams feared playing against them, and of course Arsene Wenger was the mastermind and the back-bone behind all this success.

Now considering Arsene Wenger’s scenario, the following are the reasons that made Arsene the amazing manager that he is today:

  1. He became known for turning things around for Arsenal and making them a top club with his great signings, and making them with the FA Cup and the Premier League several times
  2. Wenger got famous for turning the “boring boring Arsenal” in to a team that plays one of the most entertaining football in the world with the classy one-touch, two touch passing
  3. Another thing that adds to Arsene Wenger’s claim to fame is his skill of picking up unknown players with potential and polishing them up in to STAR players

I would like to focus on point number three for the rest of my discussion. Yes, thats right that Arsene Wenger has been stamped that he never spends too much and is famous for spending wisely. We have often heard Wenger quote that “We will sign that player only if the price is right,” and this is the philosophy and image that media has been spreading about Arsene since a very long time. According to my understanding and analysis, since the media has played a VITAL role in creating this image for Arsene Wenger, he is trapped in his own shell of EGO and media image. Although this might seem to be a very weird statement, but if we really think about this everything does fall into pieces. For example, Alex Ferguson always has a reputation of being a very intelligent manager but he was never “BRANDED” with terms like a “wise spender.”

We do know that during his time at Arsenal, Arsene Wenger has made players like Vieira, Anelka, Henry and Cesc Fabregas, which of course is an amazing achievement. But how I see it is that the importance of being on the back of making such great players, has out-grown Wenger’s obsession of winning trophies for the club that he made. Why does Arsene always dips in the transfer market to get an unknown face? Why is he always spending to get young players and looking to build them in to stars? He is over-doing it at the expense of the club and it’s success. He could rather get more experienced players and seed the young talent between them. Just like how Patrick Vieira and Cesc Fabregas became the players they are today. Did they play among a team of youth and grew as strong players? Where is the experience going to come from if everyone is under 22? Playing lousy experienced defenders like Sylvestre, is not going to instill confidence in the team? Such players are not confident themselves?

How I see it is that with his fame of making superstars from average players, Arsene Wenger has become extremely obsessed with making a team of youngsters who grows up to be the team of superstars. And of course the credit will go to Wenger if such a thing ever succeeds. But going 4 seasons trophyless, losing key play-makers and lowering the morale of the players and the fans is not going to help. Wenger is fighting for his own personal ego, since he doesn’t want to do things how other managers and football clubs are doing it. All Wenger wants to do is spend less and make big players out of them. It is about time he should understand that the overall market situation has changed globally, and it is not the same as it was in 1996. The good thing about Alex Ferguson is that he learnt from his mistakes, understood that the market and the football is changing and wisely moved ahead with time to change hi tactics. He makes players as well as buys expensive to give his team the right blend of players, mentality and confidence. The problem with Arsene Wenger is that, he is still stuck in the 1990s and he doesn’t want to get out of the same mindset. He just feels that everything that he thinks is right, but he should understand that by now and stop fighting for his ego. He should accept the change and move on to change his own tactics, buy experience and put the club on the right track again.

I am not against Arsene, I am just against his ego of not accepting the change with time. Atleast I don’t see things changing too much at Arsenal if Arsene Wenger continues to use the same tactics he has been using in the past 4 trophy-less seasons. And it is not about a trophy at the end of the day, it is more about how the team plays and how we can retain players. And for God’s sake we cannot turn players like Djourou, Alex Song and Denilson into World Class players. Give me or any other player that much match time and they might turn out to be better.

Signing off with the hope that things become well at Arsenal. And I am not going to go and support any other team, if you want to do it? You are most welcome to!

EPL: Arsenal vs Chelsea (10th May 2009) – Emirates Stadium (Review & Opinion)

Disappointment again for all the Arsenal fans after falling prey to Chelsea and losing the Super Sunday clash 4-1. A lot was not expected today from Arsenal, but still the fans were expecting a better result for Arsenal. Unfortunately, despite Arsenal’s attacking mentality and free flowing football, Arsene Wenger’s tactic’s went wrong yet again today. Although I would agree to the fact that in terms of quick passing and moves, Arsenal was playing very well but the problem was revealed when Chelsea gained the possession and came attacking towards the Arsenal goal.

Arsene Wenger tells everyone that this team has great potential, but I am sorry to say that players like Alex Song and Denilson, might have potential, but that potential is not upto Arsenal’s standards. There were two main areas that I could identify left a loop hole for Chelsea to exploit. The first problem lies at the position of the holding mid-fielder, and by now we all know that Alex Song or Denilson is NOT the solution to that. Why can’t Arsene see it himself? Or is he just too stubborn to understand and accept what everyone is seeing? Flamini gave us that edge, and we never retained him. We need a strong player with the right mentality and with the right confidence who can play for Arsenal, we need a proper solution!

The second position is the Arsenal defense, and we need to fix it. I can’t get one thing… correct me if I am wrong. We sold Sol Campbell when he was about 30 and didn’t give him a contract extension to retain him. Similarly, we let go of Lauren, Vieira and even Pires and never thought of giving them longer contract extensions because of the Arsenal policy of not giving more than a year contracts to players who are aged 30 or more. Do you think we should have got Sylvestre or Gallas who were nearing 30, and that too, both from our RIVAL teams? Why don’t we get this policy shit straight then? Why did we need to lose our loyal players to get players almost the same age from our rival teams…? Well.. Forget it! I just don’t know what else to say…

The point is .. that after the 3-1 defeat against Manchester United all the fans were expecting a better result today from Arsenal and Arsene’s tactics so that the fans and the club could regain atleast some honour back. It is such a pity … that the result was even worse.. 4-1… and that too at the Emirates Stadium!!

One more thing that I cannot understand is that, why does Wenger always use the 4-5-1 formation when that never works for us? It was the same against Manchester United.. and the same against Chelsea today! On top of that, previously when Wenger was asked if he was looking at getting some new signings in the summer after the Champions League knock out… and Mr. Arsene Wenger replied in his own typical way that  when Diaby and Bendtner is already in the squad, bringing someone else would be unfair to them…

I am speechless now… I am just speechless because I am pissed to the core!!

Why is Arshavin not playing against Chelsea?

Already upset by the Champions League knock out of Arsenal against Manchester United, I was hoping that Arsene would atleast try to do something to regain some honour for the club against Chelsea in the Barclay’s Premier League tie at the Emirates Stadium on 10 May 2009 on Super Sunday. I mean it is just ridiculous to find out that Arshavin is not playing again because he had some flu and he is feeling ill?

I don’t know but I have a weird feeling, Arshavin was not given a chance against Chelsea in the FA Cup Semi Final against Chelsea about a couple of weeks back, without any specific reason? Although everyone was expecting Arshavin to be in the game, and no one knows why Arshavin wasn’t put on the field? Isn’t this just crazy? Okay I can forget that! Today’s match was another one against Chelsea that everyone was expecting Arshavin to play, but he is not there because he is ill… If we start noticing, Arshavin has been a part of all the fixtures against all teams and is always preferred by Arsene Wenger, which was also proved against Liverpool at Anfield, with the exception of the UEFA Champions League and the matches against Chelsea.

I don’t know about you guys, but this can be possible because of two reasons:

  1. Either it is pure bad luck or a coincidence
  2. Or is this because of some sort of Russian connection?

It is very weird how he is not available for matches against Chelsea for some reason. Do ponder over this!

Apart from that, Alisher has said that Arsenal should spend more which of course all of us as fans do. But I seriously doubt that Arsene would do that. When he was questioned about signing big names after the Champions League defeat, he answered in his own typical style that the club already has Diaby and Bendtner, and it would not be a fair for for them to bring in new players. OHKAY!! I agree that Diaby and Bendner are potential good players, but tell me something for God’s sake:

“Does Arsenal exist to groom and make big players from unidentified ones or does it exist to play football and win something?”

I still cannot make out what the club and Arsene is aiming to do here? It is about time we show some spark and show that we belong to the big four and we’re not just an ordinary team who don’t know how to get their act straight! And come on, we need to take simple decisions better and need that hunger and confidence in our team. I cannot see the confidence that Arsenal used to have in our current squad and we seriously, I mean seriously need some players who can help change things around and who can help instill that confidence back in our team.

Arsenal Fan, Suleiman Omondi, Hanged Himself After Their Champions League Defeat on 5th May 2009

This is to inform all of you who don’t know that an Arsenal fan in Kenya, hanged himself after the horrible Arsenal defeat in the UEFA Champions League Semi-Final against Manchester United.

Suleiman Omondi, aged 29, was found hanged in a middle class Nairobi estate wearing an Arsenal shirt after he left depressed from a pub. It was reported that he took some drinks and broke down in tears during the final minutes of the match. At another source it is also reported that he left around at half time when Arsenal was 2-0 down after arguing with a Manchester United fan, and later was found dead as he hung himself from a rope at his house. The police are still investigating the actual reasons for his death.

Arsenal lost 3-0  against Manchester United that night and this result has hurt and depressed all the Arsenal fans from around the world. But Suleiman was affected so badly that he couldn’t take the depression. BBC representative in Nairobi has said that this incident has shocked everyone in Kenya, and I am sure everyone one of is shocked to hear this. As reported further, Suleiman seemed to be in good spirits before the match an even till the team conceded the 1st goal in the 8th minute. But after the 2nd goal he broke down and got really upset, and then, a Manchester United fan taunted him after which he got really angry and held the Manchester United fan by the neck and pressed him. Other people intervened, and he left the pub in rage. He was found dead on Wednesday morning.

Check this news out at the BBC Website. Brawls are common in Kenya and there have been other such cases in the past.

PS: This is a wake up call to Arsenal. This is how much it hurts all the fans when you play hopelessly. It might just be financials for the Arsenal stakeholders, might just be business for the Arsenal Board of Directors, might be just another job for Arsene Wenger, might just be a career for the players … but this club is the LIFE for all the supporters…! May Suleiman Omondi R.I.P.

Review: Arsenal vs Manchester United (5th May 2009) – Emirates Stadium – Semi Final (UEFA Champions League)

A lot was expected and promised with the Arsenal fans for today’s match by Arsene Wenger and the players. The fans were asked to be at the Emirates Stadium and give a Volcanic reception. Arsenal was to give a fight back that Manchester United couldn’t have sustained. Arsenal didnt even prepared for the penalties, since Arsene Wenger boasted to be so confident that Manchester United sounded like a they would not do anything.

Well to start off with a basic analysis, for the first 5 minutes Arsenal looked to score and it seemed that the game might go to the penalities if Arsenal doesn’t win it straight off. Just three minutes after that, Van Der Sar’s goal kick landed in the Arsenal danger zone and Christiano Ronaldo’s cross went straight in to the path of Park Ji Sung because Gibbs was unable to clear the ball since he slipped. GOAL – Manchester United. After that, Arsenal’s free flowing football did not come out that well since the pressure of scoring three goals to go through was building up on them.

In the 11th minute, Ronaldo scored on a 41-yard free kick again, and Arsenal’s dreams of going to Rome for the Champions League Final went down the drain. All the supporters looked upset since the game was almost over. Honestly, I did lost interest at that time because I didn’t know what to do. But still I managed to watch the complete match, knowing that Arsenal was not able to create any chances and now actually they had to score 4 goals to go through. The seats were getting empty at the Emirates Stadium, and all the fans started to return home upset by the game their team couldn’t even sustain.

In the second half, I did try to keep myself glued to the couch because I convinced myself to watch this game as just another football match, and it started looking better. But on the 61st minute.. Boom!!! 3rd Goal!! 3-) to Manchester United. What a counter attack… there was no one to defend? And what the hell was Djourou doing?  He let ronaldo take the shot and didn’t even try to slide in or atleast block him one way or they other? Poor defending really!

Arsenal did score in the 75th minute from a penalty, that was earned by a red-card challenge by Fletcher on Fabregas. The final score Arsenal 1  - 3 Manchester United. Manchester United goes through with 4 aggregate goals and will face either Chelsea or Barcelona in the Final in Rome. Thousands of empty seats could be seen when Wenger shook hands with Ferguson. At the end of the day, all I can say is well played Manchester United, and they really did. They were quick, fast, determined and they knew they had to score, unlike our superb striker Mr. Emmanuel Adebayor!

Even though this team is young and there is a long way to go, but my question to all the Arsenal supporters out there is that when we are trophy-less since the past 4 seasons, do you think it would be easy to hold on to our star players when other clubs come in with great offers? Now expect to see a few big names leave the club this season, and a few new young ones in the team when the next season starts.
