Arsenal Fan, Suleiman Omondi, Hanged Himself After Their Champions League Defeat on 5th May 2009
This is to inform all of you who don’t know that an Arsenal fan in Kenya, hanged himself after the horrible Arsenal defeat in the UEFA Champions League Semi-Final against Manchester United.
Suleiman Omondi, aged 29, was found hanged in a middle class Nairobi estate wearing an Arsenal shirt after he left depressed from a pub. It was reported that he took some drinks and broke down in tears during the final minutes of the match. At another source it is also reported that he left around at half time when Arsenal was 2-0 down after arguing with a Manchester United fan, and later was found dead as he hung himself from a rope at his house. The police are still investigating the actual reasons for his death.
Arsenal lost 3-0 against Manchester United that night and this result has hurt and depressed all the Arsenal fans from around the world. But Suleiman was affected so badly that he couldn’t take the depression. BBC representative in Nairobi has said that this incident has shocked everyone in Kenya, and I am sure everyone one of is shocked to hear this. As reported further, Suleiman seemed to be in good spirits before the match an even till the team conceded the 1st goal in the 8th minute. But after the 2nd goal he broke down and got really upset, and then, a Manchester United fan taunted him after which he got really angry and held the Manchester United fan by the neck and pressed him. Other people intervened, and he left the pub in rage. He was found dead on Wednesday morning.
Check this news out at the BBC Website. Brawls are common in Kenya and there have been other such cases in the past.
PS: This is a wake up call to Arsenal. This is how much it hurts all the fans when you play hopelessly. It might just be financials for the Arsenal stakeholders, might just be business for the Arsenal Board of Directors, might be just another job for Arsene Wenger, might just be a career for the players … but this club is the LIFE for all the supporters…! May Suleiman Omondi R.I.P.

Very sad but this guy obviously had mental health issues. to commit suicide over a football match is insane.
Thanks for the comment Zeeshan, but to be a true football fan it hurts a them when their team loses and that too with such a performance. There are a lot of people and fans out there supporting other teams also, who are fanatics because they follow their team so faithfully and strongly that its an important part of their life. It does affect a lot of people, and Arsenal’s current form has affected a lot of Arsenal fans out there one way or the other. Its not just a normal match for a lot of supporters..
Okay, we gotta do something. Maybe we should send a few thousand letters to the official Arsenal website, or maybe we should all commit suicide for the board to notice us, I don’t know. I’m sitting here reading about how UEFA is actually thinking about withdrawing Fletcher’s red card just because it’s United, and Barcelona also suggesting that UEFA should cancel the red cards for both teams. WOW , if it was Arsenal or another team we wouldn’t have waited 2 minutes to hear a big NO.
Anyways, I guess from the timer on the right it’s your birthday. Happy birthday and please convince anyone to write a letter. Not a hate letter, just a normal letter to reason with the board, God maybe even Usmanov is our way out of this ( I can’t believe i’m saying this).
In my comment above, I meant to say God, Maybe Usmanov is our way out of this ( I can’t believe i’m saying this).AGAIN I can’t believe I’m saying this
I agree with you totally Masry. Because it’s United and Barca, chances are that they would get their demands fulfilled.
By the way I am ready if we can do something about communicating it to Arsenal by sending letters, committing suicide is not the solution to anything. Maybe we can get some fans from London who can gather up and go to talk to the club on behalf of all the supporters? Or maybe we can talk about it through an official supporters club. It is a sad state indeed buddy. Just too hurt.. wish I could do something about it.
And hey… thanks for the birthday wish!! Really appreciate that
!! I have a few people who have been writing continuous letters to the Arsenal communication department. If you want I can try to share the letters and the replies on my blog. Do let me know if we can use them somehow, but the replies are more generic from them and we can’t really make any conclusions on that basis.
And I know. I am not in the favor of Usmanov taking over our amazing club, but when I see the situation of our club, this seems like a viable solution because Chelsea, Liverpool and ManU, all have a strong financial backing for potential signings every year, which unfortunately Arsenal is deprived of.
PLEASE post the letters on ur blog. I’ve been a fan since I was 10 and everyone around us is rooting for UTD or Chelsea because they’ve been winning lately. Where were Chelsea’s fans before the Russian Lepricon took over? We were fans in the good times, so it’s fair to be fans in the bad as well, but let’s just agree that Wenger leaving before this project he envisioned is over is NOT the way to go, In the past he used to sign 31 year old Suker and 27 year old Pires and he won trophies, he could’ve done that untill now but instead he cares about this club more than Sir Alex cares about UTD (they lost a LOT of money). My point is, it won’t cost Wenger anything from his own money to buy players, but he cares about the financial situatuion of this club (He has a degree in economics). I know it hurts him as much as it hurts us, but when David Villa says and I quote “I want Arsenal” and u can’t afford him then we need to make our voices heard. I don’t care who he buys as long as it’s someone who is willing to die in the field to get the ball and someone who could be an example for the young players.
i think its about time someone set the record straight here, the journalists who filed the story did not get the actual facts right, that same journalist did not even get the age right! he had other issues and it was purely coincidental that he took his life on the same day! he dint have mental issues as someone had pointed out, he was a good man. the next time anyone should write this, remember its never always what it seems. he was not stupid, he was not a lunatic. he is at peace, so please let him be.
