Review: Arsenal vs Manchester United (5th May 2009) – Emirates Stadium – Semi Final (UEFA Champions League)

A lot was expected and promised with the Arsenal fans for today’s match by Arsene Wenger and the players. The fans were asked to be at the Emirates Stadium and give a Volcanic reception. Arsenal was to give a fight back that Manchester United couldn’t have sustained. Arsenal didnt even prepared for the penalties, since Arsene Wenger boasted to be so confident that Manchester United sounded like a they would not do anything.

Well to start off with a basic analysis, for the first 5 minutes Arsenal looked to score and it seemed that the game might go to the penalities if Arsenal doesn’t win it straight off. Just three minutes after that, Van Der Sar’s goal kick landed in the Arsenal danger zone and Christiano Ronaldo’s cross went straight in to the path of Park Ji Sung because Gibbs was unable to clear the ball since he slipped. GOAL – Manchester United. After that, Arsenal’s free flowing football did not come out that well since the pressure of scoring three goals to go through was building up on them.

In the 11th minute, Ronaldo scored on a 41-yard free kick again, and Arsenal’s dreams of going to Rome for the Champions League Final went down the drain. All the supporters looked upset since the game was almost over. Honestly, I did lost interest at that time because I didn’t know what to do. But still I managed to watch the complete match, knowing that Arsenal was not able to create any chances and now actually they had to score 4 goals to go through. The seats were getting empty at the Emirates Stadium, and all the fans started to return home upset by the game their team couldn’t even sustain.

In the second half, I did try to keep myself glued to the couch because I convinced myself to watch this game as just another football match, and it started looking better. But on the 61st minute.. Boom!!! 3rd Goal!! 3-) to Manchester United. What a counter attack… there was no one to defend? And what the hell was Djourou doing?  He let ronaldo take the shot and didn’t even try to slide in or atleast block him one way or they other? Poor defending really!

Arsenal did score in the 75th minute from a penalty, that was earned by a red-card challenge by Fletcher on Fabregas. The final score Arsenal 1  - 3 Manchester United. Manchester United goes through with 4 aggregate goals and will face either Chelsea or Barcelona in the Final in Rome. Thousands of empty seats could be seen when Wenger shook hands with Ferguson. At the end of the day, all I can say is well played Manchester United, and they really did. They were quick, fast, determined and they knew they had to score, unlike our superb striker Mr. Emmanuel Adebayor!

Even though this team is young and there is a long way to go, but my question to all the Arsenal supporters out there is that when we are trophy-less since the past 4 seasons, do you think it would be easy to hold on to our star players when other clubs come in with great offers? Now expect to see a few big names leave the club this season, and a few new young ones in the team when the next season starts. • nice review you have there, the thing is arsenal was my team once, a team which had potential, physical strength, abilities and best players of the world.

the era of pires, lugnberg , veira , cole , fabregas and henry.. policy at that time was different.. he sold pires when he was 30 even cambell left arsenal when he was over 30..

what i dont understand. arsenal is one of the biggest club why cant it afford to keep its players
    are they short on money..

    good players dont come cheap
and as we all know arsene makes players
    he has stopped practicing that.
he now sells them when they are too young
preety soon we will see the exit of fabregas.
and some left over players will be brought in
    just like silvestre and gallas.
he let flamini go to milan.. hleb go to barca
i have seriously no idea what this guy wants to do

he cant win like this u have to hv experience to make a difference

  • Dear Sarosh
If you read this please reply. I couldn’t sleep last night because of this. And I’m not saying this out of anger, but we don’t deserve Gibbs, Denilson, Djourou or the likes, we deserve better. Arsenal is the 3rd richest team on the planet (4th if you count city), and this policy has been killing us for a long time, I love Arsene Wenger, but he needs to treat us like human beings it’s coming to 5 years without a trophy, even Spur won something. Now unlike in the past, big names don’t wanna come to this club and Arsene Wenger doesn’t plan to buy them, we probably lost v.persie and we should get rid of Adebayour.

Conclusion: Even a monkey could win a CL and EPL when having Unlimited funds, however we don’t have to spend like Barcelona, Man U or Real Madrid, but we should at least spend. I don’t wanna see 2020 and tell my kids that in the past my team was a great team that just shouldn’t happen.

    Sincerely
A devestated and pissed off gunner

  • @ Arsalan: I do agree with you Arsalan that, those were great times of Arsenal when there were great players who even knew how to fight on the pitch and take a stand. That really was the golden time and Wenger made that team a great hit.

They don’t keep expensive players and want to try and sell them. Lets see if someone stays after the summer transfer market after going 4 seasons trophy-less.

Hoping for the best… Gunner for life!

  • Dear Mohammad Masry,

It was the same case with me as I couldn’t sleep last night! I was deeply hurt, trust me. I definitely agree with you that Arsenal doesn’t deserve players like Denilson, Djourou and the whole under average lot. It is very hurting to see this team lose this way. A lot of gunners might still blame me for being a disgrace to the Arsenal community as they did when I wrote an “Open Letter to Wenger” after the first leg. But trust me, this is pure bull-shit. I was and will always be critical about the things that my team does ’cause maybe I love them a little more.

I hate Adebayor seriously. And I dont know, why every player who comes to this club, goes out for injury … for the whole season. We lost Van Persie a few seasons this way, we lost Eduardo this whole season.. and even Tomas Rosicky. Fabregas wasnt there for quite a long time… then in the past it was Diaby .. I don’t know what the hell is wrong. Are we cursed or something? I just couldn’t get this shit .. seriously!

We need players like Arshavin, who know how to pass and who know how to shoot. None of the Arsenal player is good enough to give the opponent goal keeper a hard time by testing him. Other teams rely on trial and error.. if they shoot 10 times.. they do get their luck the 11th time… If we will not shoot for God’s sake.. we are only going to get a few classy chances.. and that’s not a guarantee to score..

Depressed and Pissed off as you are my friend…

  • Woah! What is going on? We had been led to believe that this was going to be a tight and tense affair, but it looks like Manchester United are going to take this tie at a canter.

It is a trademark free-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo, struck with the usual venom, but for my money Manuel Almunia ought to be getting something to that. It has come a very long way and it is a comfortable height for him. Harsh or fair?

  • Glory-glory Manchester United!Hope BPL and CL will be maintained by us.

  • I am in general agreemant with what has been stated here. Like Wenger I was distraught with the dismal performance arsenal gave on the night. At this level it is the extra ten percent that gets you through to the final; Man U had that extra bit of determination and conviction. It hurts me to say but the best team won who simply out played Arsenal at there own game; that is why they are European champions. Would it have been different if Arshavin was allowed to play who knows and where was that fighting counter attack spirit that dominated the Liverpool game two weeks ago and last year where Sami Nasri won the game aginst Man U. I love Wengers style of play but like Chelsea under Scholari maybe it needs a Huddink to change the fortunes of Arsenal. The way it is going I see Fabregas leaving for Spain and Adebayor going to the highest bidder commensurate to the type of mercenary bastard he actually is. There is nothing more fatuos than him kissing the Arsenal badge when he scores. Then again things could be worse we could all be supporting Liverpool.

  • @Xeeshan & Feenazz: Good work guys … Man U played well .. can’t say more than that!

@Sartorious: Very well said. To an extent I believe it might have been different if Arshavin was playing…. but then again… should we just depend on one player? It hurts to see the Gunners in such problems, and I dont know if Wenger can turn it around. We have been hearing confident comments and I do respect and believe in what Arsene says. And that too because Arsene is one of the the best manager this club has ever gotten, and he has proven his worth since the time he has joined. But for the first time … it really felt that Arsenal did not give a fight to Manchester United… which agree or not.. was the better team because they did put in that 10% extra as you mentioned! We dont need Adebayor.. its better he goes.. infact it would have been better if we sold him off for 35 mn pounds last year to AC Milan … we could have used that money to get someone more aggressive, hungrier and stronger!
